LEAD INSTRUCTOR INTRODUCTION

BRIANNA BROWN, MSN, FNP

First beginning her career in the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG)- Search and Rescue while working her way through nursing school, Brianna got a taste for what it was like to truly impact lives by assisting persons at their most vulnerable moments. After post-secondary school, she went on to work full-time in one of Metro Detroit's most underserved level one trauma hospitals, where she gained a real understanding of the influence of socioeconomic status, and community violence on patient outcomes. Unable to let go of her passion for the marine environment, she utilized her medical expertise in the emergency care setting to transfer knowledge back to the marine environment and to the Rescue Specialists in the CCG as the Rescue Specialist Coordinator and Senior Search and Rescue Officer. Simultaneously, while working in this role, she transferred over to Detroit's only level one paediatric trauma centre in the emergency department as a trauma nurse where she found a deep desire for serving children. Most recently, with her commitment to life long learning and self-improvement, Brianna has obtained her Family Nurse Practitioner credentials, enabling her to serve vulnerable communities from birth to older adulthood.

My Motivation

Several years ago, my grandmother, the strong woman who raised me, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. From diagnosis all the way to illness progression she was grossly overlooked and mistreated by the healthcare system. From this experience and her subsequent death came detest with the field of work I so passionately dedicated many years to. During the grieving period, I often had thoughts of "How could these professionals not treat my grandmother with the same compassion and effort that I would do for one of their family members?" Then came what I saw as a solution and tribute to my grandmother - in every one of my programs I educate by leading by example so that the next time my loved-one has to seek medical care that the odds are increased they receive safe, compassionate care from confidently educated professionals.
